Molasses production
Molasses are a by-product obtained during the sugar manufacturing process. After extracting the juice from the cane and crystallizing the sugar, there are honeys rich in minerals such as iron, calcium and potassium, which are called molasses.
It is used in the food industry as a sweetener or ingredient in products such as breads, biscuits and sauces. It is also used in the manufacture of alcohol, in the production of biofuels and as a supplement in animal feed due to its high energy content.
The Sugar Cane Agroindustry produced 995,344 metric tons of molasses in the Harvest 2024/25.
Use in alcohol production
In the sugar cane agroindustry molasses are also used to produce alcohol. Every year, mills produce up to 65 million gallons of alcohol. This process not only maximizes the value of molasses, but also contributes to the global economy.
Significant economic contribution
In 2024, molasses exports accounted for 9% of the total exports of Guatemala’s Sugar Cane Agroindustry. This activity generated 82 million in foreign exchange for the country, highlighting the economic importance of this by-product.
